Eppie's Great Race in the spring of 2018 announced that the July 21, 2018 45th edition would be the last race. Thank you to the record number of participants that made the last running an overwhelming success!
Eppie's Great Race is known as “The World’s Oldest Triathlon®”, “The Great Race”, and the “No Swim” Triathlon. Eppie's Great Race was also the largest paddling event in the United States!
Sacramento area restaurateur/entrepreneur Eppie G. Johnson founded the event in 1974, holding the first triathlon on July 27, 1974, thus becoming the first “Modern Triathlon”. Since its debut, Eppie’s Great Race® was held every third Saturday in July and became a Northern California summertime tradition for elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and families.
The race featured a 5.82-mile run, a 12.5-mile bike and a 6.10-mile paddle held along the scenic American River Parkway in Rancho Cordova and Sacramento. There were several divisions for individual ironpersons as well as relay teams. This provided an opportunity to race for all ages and abilities. Awards were given to the first, second, & third place division winners.
Eppie's Kids Duathlon is a run and bike race, held along the American River Parkway, for kids aged four through thirteen. It is held on the third Sunday of every October. By participating in the duathlon, youngsters find out for themselves that healthy outdoor activities are fun, exciting, and rewarding. The end goal is to help them improve their fitness. The Eppie's Kids Duathlon provides children with their own event with three different distances depending on age. An adaptive division has been added for children with developmental and physical disabilities.
All entrants will receive a unique Eppie's Kids Duathlon t-shirt, finish ribbon, lunch and post-race entertainment. Overall male and female winners of each race will receive custom plaques. The top 3 male and female finishers in each single age will receive custom medallions.
While Eppie's Great Race will not take place after its 2018 event, Eppie's Kid Duathlon plans to continue to take place as an annual event.
